STAR station · Fremont

Fremont STAR-certified smog station.

Did your DMV renewal notice say your vehicle must be tested at a STAR station? Super Smog is one — and a STAR test costs the same $28.75 with our coupon.

About STAR

What the STAR program means.

STAR is a program run by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR), the state agency that licenses smog check stations. Stations in it must meet tighter performance standards and are monitored more closely, and certain vehicles can only be certified at one.

Directed vehicles

The DMV selects some vehicles for testing at a STAR station. If yours is one, a non-STAR station can’t issue the certificate.

Gross polluters

A vehicle flagged as a gross polluter also has to be certified at a STAR station.

Same coupon price

No STAR surcharge — $28.75 with the coupon, plus the $8.25 certificate on a pass.

Checking your notice

How to tell if you need STAR.

Look at the smog section of your DMV registration renewal notice. If it says the inspection must be performed at a STAR station, you’ll need a STAR-certified shop like ours. If it simply says a smog certification is required, any licensed station can test it — and we’re happy to do that too.

Either way, the visit is the same: walk in any day, we test your vehicle while you wait, and a passing result goes to the DMV electronically. See all our smog services or save the $28.75 coupon.

STAR FAQ

STAR station questions.

What is a STAR smog check station?

A smog station that meets BAR’s higher STAR performance standards and is monitored more closely than a regular station.

Why does my DMV notice say STAR station?

The DMV directs certain vehicles to STAR stations for their smog check. It’s a routine part of the program.

Can any smog shop test a STAR-directed car?

Any licensed station can run the test, but only a STAR-certified station can certify a vehicle the DMV has directed to STAR.

Is a STAR test more expensive at Super Smog?

No. It’s $28.75 with our coupon, the same as any smog check here, plus the $8.25 certificate on a pass.

Can you certify a gross polluter?

Yes. Gross polluters must be certified at a STAR station, and we’re a STAR-certified test-only station.

Do I need an appointment for a STAR test?

No — walk in any day of the week.

What happens if my vehicle fails the STAR test?

We’ll explain the result so you know what needs attention. Once it’s been addressed, bring it back for a retest — and check whether you qualify for the state’s Consumer Assistance Program.
